Agency: A Free Gift

“Every child of Heavenly Father born in the world is given at birth, as a free gift, the Light of Christ. You have felt that. It is the sense of what is right and what is wrong and what is true and what is false. That has been with you since your journey in life began…The Holy Ghost is a powerful source of light to recognize truth, to follow and love the Lord Jesus Christ, and to find your way back to God after this life.
But the spirit who led the rebellion in the world before still opposes the plan and wants you to be miserable. He wants you never to find your way home again. That enemy of your soul knows you and your goodness. He knows that if he can turn you away from walking in the light, he can both capture you and stop you from helping others along the journey. He knows how good you are and your power to teach and influence hundreds of Heavenly Father’s children in this life—and thousands over the generations that will follow your path. If he can get you to wander away from the light on your journey, he can do harm and bring misery to many….
You make choices every day and almost every hour that keep you walking in the light or moving away toward darkness. Some of the most important choices are about what you set your heart upon.”

Family: The Lord will Draw Close to Your Loved Ones When You Are Serving Others

"As we give devoted service to Him, He draws closer to those we love in our families.

... Many of you have loved ones who are wandering off the path to eternal life. You wonder what more you can do to bring them back. You can depend on the Lord to draw closer to them as you serve Him in faith.

You remember the Lord’s promise to Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdon when they were away from their families on His errands: 'My friends Sidney and Joseph, your families are well; they are in mine hands, and I will do with them as seemeth me good; for in me there is all power.'1

Like Alma and King Mosiah, some faithful parents have served the Lord long and well yet have had children who wandered despite their parents’ sacrifice for the Lord 2. They have done all they could to no apparent avail, even with help from loving and faithful friends...

... Your prayers and the prayers of those who exercise their faith will bring the Lord’s servants to help your family members. They will help them choose the way home to God, even as they are attacked by Satan and his followers, whose purpose it is to destroy families in this life and in eternity.

... My promise to you who pray and serve the Lord cannot be that you will have every blessing you may wish for yourself and your family. But I can promise you that the Savior will draw close to you and bless you and your family with what is best. You will have the comfort of His love and feel the answer of His drawing closer as you reach out your arms in giving service to others. As you bind up the wounds of those in need and offer the cleansing of His Atonement to those who sorrow in sin, the Lord’s power will sustain you. His arms are outstretched with yours to succor and bless the children of our Heavenly Father, including those in your family."

Trials: The Priesthood Can Strengthen Our Families in Trial

"In my experience, it is through times of testing that faith in God is strengthened. And as a husband and father, I relied more heavily on the power of the priesthood when my wife and children were suffering or in peril. The manifestation of God's power at these times has given me and my family hope in His promises of eternal life. Such times of family trial also have the potential to increase in us charity -- the greatest of all godly attributes. The priesthood gives us full access to the Savior's atonement. When you feel discouragement, or even dispair, remember the Savior and His promises through the priesthood. The blessings of the priesthood and its keys are available to you and to every member or your family everywhere in the world. You can be sure of that, even in the dark times. Our families can be strong, and at peace."
